Slate

Very high quality blue-grey slate is quarried in the area of Angers and Trélazé, and the region provides more than half of all French production. The quarries were formerly open to the sky, but nowadays the seams are exploited by means of deep shafts opening out into galleries several hundred metres below the surface. In the days where everything was done by hand, the slates were split by fendeurs, a group of artisans with their own traditions and culture.
